Antiquing

Wayne County is known for antique shops in and around Honesdale and Hawley, as well as Castle Antiques, which specializes in antiques and replicas. My favorite thing to do is going to auctions either at private homes or auction houses. Anything you could imagine.

Boating & Fishing

Fishing and boating can be found at the Delaware River, Long Pond, Lake Wallenpaupack, the Lackawaxen River, local fly-fishing in stocked streams, and other hidden spots. We can tell you where you can find good fishing spots, where to motorboat and water ski, jet ski, sail, kayak, tube or canoe. Promised Land State Park even rents out paddle boats.

Skiing

Downhill and cross-country skiing are popular winter sports in the region. Elk Mountain, Tanglewood and Big Bear/Masthope are nearby and have snow-making capabilities. The marked trails through the Dorflinger-Suydam Sanctuary and the nearby state parks and forests offer miles of cross-country skiing. Mt. Tone is great for downhill beginners and families with young children just starting out. Ask Kathy for additional information on places for snowmobiling and sledding.

Winter Activities

Narrowsburg, NY, only 30 minutes from Honesdale, is the eagle capitol of the world. Celebrate EagleFest on Saturday, January 19, 2008. The best times to spot eagles, our national bird, are late January and early February.

The Stourbridge Rail Excursion

Honesdale is the birthplace of the American railroad and the small brick building which now houses the Wayne County Historical Society was once the D&H Canal's company office. On August 8, 1829, the Delaware & Hudson operated the first commercial locomotive on rails in the western hemisphere. That locomotive left from this spot, ran three miles to Seelyville and returned. You can take excursions of different lengths, either just to Hawley, or all the way to Lackawaxen, Pike County. The schedule and more information found at the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce.

Swimming

There are swimming spots hidden along the Delaware River, and Honesdale has a public pool, Lake Wallenpaupack also has a lovely public beach.

Yoga & Pilates

Yoga and Pilates are available at the Himalayan Institute Main Street campus. It also features a café, book store, and gift shop. The Main Campus of the Himalyan Institute is located just 3.1 miles north of our bed and breakfast. They offer many more in-depth programs and weekend retreats.
